Magic Spells?
I don't know what I did wrong but when used hot foot powder on my enemies it did not get rid of them. They have now become more strong. Why is that? What happened? They did cause me a lot of pain and suffering, so I believed that I was right to use it. How do I stop them from hurting me? What other spells should I try, or should I try and undo the spell for it to get better?

Did you have enough faith to believe that your concoction would work? You must have doubted it would work so it did not work properly.

How did the geography & culture of Afghanistan help cause failure of the Soviet invasion?
I'm writing an essay on why the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a failure to a great extent. Can you please tell me if my first paragraph on the geography and culture of Afghanistan is good? Critique is good & you can correct it if you really want to. The unique geography and culture of Afghanistan caused many difficulties for Soviet troops because it was not the type of battleground that they were used to. The country of Afghanistan is made up of nearly impassable mountains and desert terrain. It was extremely difficult for Soviet troops to get their heavy artillery over the mountains and through the rough terrain. Their heavy equipment, such as battle tanks, could not stand the unfamiliar, unbearably hot weather. Thus, they moved very slowly and were ineffective. This gave Afghan soldiers an advantage because they were experts in their own terrain. It was very easy for Afghan soldiers to pick up the sound of Soviet soldiers that were able to surpass the mountains. The Soviet war policy was self-deprecating because it stressed centralized frontal attacks with large units. Large units of soldiers were heard very clearly by the enemy when advancing on the rough ground. Soviet Soldiers had even more of a disadvantage since they were trained to operate inside of their armored vehicles, and simply weren’t taught to fight outside of the vehicles. This was extremely inconvenient in Afghanistan since the roads were not paved, and vehicles could barely navigate anywhere. The Afghan soldiers were poor drivers when presented with the unfamiliar demographics of Afghanistan. Unlike the Soviets, the Afghan soldiers operated on foot and on horses. Horses could easily navigate throughout the treacherous hills, allowing Afghan troops to shoot down at the Soviets from unreachable locations. While on foot, Afghan soldiers would sneak up in small groups on the Soviets while they were unprepared to defend themselves, with aid from infantry patrols. The Soviet army was not familiar with the use of infantry patrols, which were used extensively with Afghan soldiers. Another, even more important tactic used by Afghan soldiers was guerilla warfare. Guerilla warfare stemmed from the unique culture that exists in Afghanistan, as a result of the distinctive geography. Due to the physical divisions, the people are extremely provincial, with more loyalty to their specific clan or ethnic group than to a government or a country. They are also Muslims, and extremely religious and conservative. The major ethnic group is the Pashtun, but there are over ten minority groups. There is not one large group of soldiers, but rather multiple, very loyal groups of soldiers. The Soviets brought in over one hundred thousand soldiers, secured Kabul quickly and installed Babrak Karmal as their puppet leader. However, they were met with fierce resistance when they ventured out of their strongholds into the countryside. Resistance fighters, called Mujahedeen, saw the Christian or atheist Soviets controlling Afghanistan as a defilement of Islam as well as of their traditional culture. Proclaiming a "jihad"(holy war), they gained the support of the Islamic world. Using convenient guerilla tactics, Soviet soldiers would attack or raid quickly, then disappear into the mountains, causing great destruction without pitched battles. Sometimes they would even use man-made tunnels to their advantage, rising out of the ground at the utmost unexpected times. There was no one strong central stronghold from which resistance operated, which lead to loyal groups of soldiers that strongly defended all areas of their country. The fighters used weapons that they could take from the Soviets or were given by the US. Decentralized and scattered around Afghanistan. I commend you if you actually read this whole thing. I didn't realize how long it was, worry.

It is pretty good but a bit too long to be one paragraph don't you think? It also depends what this first paragraph is about. If it is an essay your writing about then you really didn't hook the reader in much in the beginning. You just went straight to the point. Also the length of the paragraph really doesn't help when finding the thesis. Although your first sentence pretty much sums up what your talking about. It is good, but try to make this into 2 paragraphs and come up with an introductory paragraph because it seems you have the rest. I recommend you keep things like they are but start your essay off with the previously mentioned introductory paragraph. maybe this can help http://homeworktips.about.com/od/paperassignments/a/introsentence.htm

Don't our American soldiers get too hot with all of their gear and the heat in Iraq?
Each soldier wears an undershirt, long-sleeved camouflage shirt and long pants, thick socks and then heavy combat boots, then on top of that they wear heavy body armor, some are now wearing armor over their upper arms and groin too, then they have the kevlar helmet, then they have their rifles or machine guns (some of which can be really heavy), then they have to carry all their own ammo (which is also heavy), their sidearms, and all their gear on their bodies and in their heavy packs. And then they have to spend long days on their feet in 120+ degree heat and be able to maintain focus and fight the enemy. Isn't there a serious danger of just passing out from the heat, and even if they don't, can't their combat performance be diminished and their exhaustion increased from all this heavy gear in such heat? Is it possible that being lightly equipped (like the insurgents in Iraq are) might be an advantage? Thank you, answers from military personnel are greatly appreciated. I'm just curious. No need to be like: "I see you haven't tried it yourself". That's right, I have no intention of joining the Army, but that doesn't mean you have to act superior. Also, how do you cope? And do Humvees, tanks, and other armored vehicles or trucks have air conditioning? And doesn't all that weight make you move slower, therefore making you into an easier target?

All of the trucks, humvees, etc...have air conditioning now. A vehicle is considered deadlined in our unit if the AC is down. While that might sound great, remember that you hae a big hatch in the top where the gunner sits. So while it may be 110 outside it is maybe ten degrees cooler on the inside. In addition the heat from the engine and especially the transmission can give a person 1st degree burns. Soldiers have to wear gloves to touch metal during the hottest part of the day. It makes sense to put as much armor on a soldier as possible when they are just riding around in a vehicle and not getting out. However, when a soldier has to get out, wrestle with a detainee, run up and down stairs or patrol down a street, the amount of armor is not only hot but very bulky. Movement is limited. The bulk also makes getting in and out of vehicles very difficult. My gear, ammo, weapon, vest etc...weighs over 70 lbs. I weigh 160 and dropping by the day. One of the great things about the military is things I would have thought impossible when I was a civilian I see done everyday. A human is capable of much more than most people think. Being lightly equipped is not an advantage. The more ammo, grenades, radios, etc.. ican carry the better. The insurgents are lightly equipped and lightly armored. While a certain amount of armor makes sense, what today's "light" infantrymen are wearing is overboard. Once technology has decreased the bulk and weight of our armor I will be all for wearing all we can. But right now as an infantryman I say we have too much. Take off the crotchplate, the deltoid protectors, and let me roll. Don't let anyone give you a hard time jsut because you aren't serving. It's not for everyone. The fact that you are thinking about soldiers and the challenges they face is more than most people actually do. So thank you.

A clever man is persuading my elderly father to give up his life savings for nothing. I need advice?
A clever man has persuaded my dad using the book Influence by Robert Cialdini P.hD. to make him buy a house and pay twice of what it’s worth and lose his life savings. He did this by exploiting fixed action patterns in behavior. For example. The word "because" is a shortcut we use. Studies have shown that if you use the world "because" people will be more likely to believe you no matter what you explanation is. Even if it’s a bad excuse people will still believe you because it’s like we operate on autopilot when we hear “because” we think okay he has a good excuse. An example with animals is you can fool a turkey by giving it a replica of its enemy and as long as it has a tape recorder inside that goes cheep--cheep, the turkey will mother it. The other triggers that start fixed behavior in humans are contrast (put your left foot in a bucket of cold water then put your right foot in a bucket of hot water. When you put both feet in a bucket of warm water the left foot will seem hot and the right foot will seem cold even though the water is just warm. This is due to perception.), favors (reciprocation) (we pay back favors and trust the person that helps us even if its uninvited. If a family you don’t even know sends you a Christmas card and you feel obligated to send them back one of yours), Consistency (we will do dumb stuff just to be consistent with ourselves. Car dealerships will give you a $13,900 price on car worth that is worth $14,000 so you think you are getting a good deal and want to buy it. After filling out paper work for 4 hours they tell you they forgot a $950 item in the price making the car now overpriced but you still pay it anyway because you already decided to buy it and will foolishly lose $850) liking (we say yes easier to those we like. This is why Tupperware parties are so profitable. Friends want to say yes and buy stuff from friends), authority (we listen to and obey experts. Kids listen to parents. Adults listen to doctors. Germans listened to Hitler because he was authority and did the holocaust.), and scarcity (we want what we can't have. Think the forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet only increased their desire for each other) These shortcuts usually help us but they can be used to our loss as well if someone wants to use them against us. All of these influence techniques are being used on my dad to persuade him lose his life savings. The problem is I told him this and he can't believe it from me because even though I'm a psych major, I'm only 19 years old and if I'm right his whole life is pointless because he is being outshined by a 19 year old kid. What kind of life has he had if someone 45 years younger than him is already better than him? What kind of meaning does their whole life have then? To protect his ego he has to go into denial. If I'm right he has no time left to redeem himself so all hope of having a good life is gone. I can't count on family or friends to help because they can't. Does anyone know someone I can go to like a therapist or psychologist who can tell my dad a white lie to make it look like they found out his mistake before me so he can admit he is wrong and can stop a con man from taking everything? I need anyone who would be superior or equal to a 64 year old so it won't hurt his ego to prove him wrong. I just don't know who can help. I need someone better or equal to my dad and tell him they were responsible for seeing his mistake and not me. Only then can he admit he is wrong and save himself. What should I do?

you can find other people who have taken advice from for the "clever man" and now regret it... it is not the first time that this man in doing this... find other people who he has worked with that are miserable now and introduce them to your father.
